Unexpected challenges can derail your life.
As a Christian, you may be asking questions like:
“I sure didn’t see this coming…
’Why is God allowing this to happen to me?”
“How does my faith help me navigate these circumstances?”
“It feels like every time I start to get my life on track, something slams into me and knocks me off the rails… is God trying to tell me something?”
“I’ve tried so hard to trust God and do the right things… why isn’t my life working”?
Sooner or later all of us are bloodied by life in ways we can’t easily understand (remember the book of Job). At this point you’re considering a Christian counselor to provide some help. But what can you hope for from a “Christian Counselor” vs. a secular one? Let me suggest a few answers:
- Someone who sees all of life’s difficulties— circumstantial, relational, emotional—as a context for spiritual formation rather than just problems to be fixed.
- A person who looks primarily to the Scriptures and Christian truth for the source of guidance, wisdom and giving context to the struggles the client is facing.
- A person who has reflected deeply about how the Christian faith informs understanding who we are as people who bear the image of God on one hand, and as fallen beings on the other. How does our faith speak to what are we designed for emotionally, spiritually, and especially relationally? And how might we have gotten off track?
It is also helpful for your counselor to have some seasoning… I have been counseling for 30 years now, and have been a serious disciple of Christ for over 50 years. I bring to bear all that I have learned—and am still learning—from my journey of faith through the years for the sake of my clients.
